Overlay plywood

The resin-treated overlay provides a uniform surface for paint or applied graphics. Beneath it, plywood veneers provide thickness and fastener holding. That construction means the face and edge have different weather needs.

What does MDO mean?

MDO means medium-density overlay. It is an exterior plywood product with a resin-impregnated paper overlay that creates a smoother sign face than ordinary plywood.

Why use MDO instead of ACM?

MDO provides more thickness, fastener holding, and a substantial edge. It can suit larger framed post-and-panel signs and certain field conditions. ACM is lighter and does not rely on wood veneers, so it may be better where weight or moisture exposure dominates.

Does MDO need edge sealing?

Yes. The overlay protects the faces, but cut edges, drilled holes, routed areas, and damaged coatings can expose the plywood construction. Proper preparation and sealing reduce moisture entry.

Does S2 paint MDO signs?

Can MDO be used double sided?

Is MDO permanent?

It is an exterior sign material, but “permanent” still depends on edge sealing, coating, frame drainage, post movement, sun, moisture, and maintenance. It is not immune to water simply because it is exterior plywood.
