Use aluminum when the edge, fastening, or film system benefits from metal all the way through.

Solid aluminum is a dependable choice for parking signs, property rules, building identification, directional signs, wall panels, equipment labels, reflective signs, and smaller freestanding panels. It is corrosion resistant, comparatively light, and compatible with a wide range of painted and vinyl finishes.

It is not automatically the best panel simply because it is metal. For a large flat printed sign supported continuously by a frame, ACM may provide more stiffness for less weight. For an illuminated face, acrylic or polycarbonate may be the correct optical material. The choice should follow the installation.

Thickness and support work together.

A thin sheet can perform well when its edges are retained or its face is supported. The same sheet can oil-can, vibrate, or bend when stretched across a large open span. Increasing metal thickness helps, but framing, return folds, ribs, rails, and fastener spacing may be the smarter way to control a larger panel.

Holes and slots need enough edge distance. Dissimilar fasteners should be isolated when corrosion is a concern. Exposed edges may remain natural, be deburred, eased, painted, hemmed, folded, or hidden inside a frame.

Is an aluminum sign panel solid metal?

Yes. Unlike ACM, a solid aluminum panel does not contain a plastic core. The metal thickness is visible at the edge and the panel can accept appropriate holes, fasteners, bends, or formed details.

Does aluminum rust?

Aluminum does not rust like steel, but its surface can oxidize and finishes can still weather. Paint, pretreatment, film selection, cut edges, dissimilar-metal contact, and the actual exposure all affect long-term appearance.

When is aluminum better than ACM?

Solid aluminum is often preferred for parking, regulatory, reflective, smaller directional, exposed-edge, formed, or directly fastened signs. ACM is often more efficient for larger flat graphic panels where light weight and stiffness are the priority.

Can aluminum signs be reflective?

Yes. Reflective sheeting can cover the entire panel or selected graphics. The film grade, background, copy, orientation, and source of approaching light should be selected for the application.

Can an aluminum panel be double sided?

Yes. It can be finished on both faces and installed in a frame, suspended system, post system, or other double-sided structure. The support must account for panel size and wind.

How thick should an aluminum sign be?

Thickness depends on dimensions, support spacing, exposure, holes, bends, and whether the panel is framed. We specify it from the complete installation rather than using one thickness for every project.

Do aluminum wall signs need permits?

Exterior wall and freestanding signs may require permits regardless of illumination. S2 checks the jurisdiction, property criteria, size, and mounting before the final production plan.

Can old aluminum panels be re-faced?

Sometimes. The panel must be flat, sound, cleanable, and compatible with the new finish. Severe corrosion, bends, extra holes, failing coatings, or multiple old graphic layers may make replacement the better choice.
