A cabinet can identify one storefront, hold a complete logo, serve both directions of traffic, become the illuminated face of a monument, or organize tenant panels on a larger freestanding structure. The right construction depends on where it sits and how it will be maintained.

What is a sign cabinet—and when is it the right choice?

An LED sign cabinet is an aluminum enclosure that holds the lighting system behind a sign face. Unlike channel letters, which separate a name into individual fabricated characters, a cabinet keeps the logo, copy, background color, and graphic composition together as one unit.

That makes cabinets useful when the brand cannot be divided cleanly into individual letters, when a wall needs fewer penetrations, when a property already has a cabinet structure, or when the face needs to be replaceable as tenants and graphics change.

Cabinet does not mean generic box.

Depth, framing, retainers, face material, paint, mounting, internal structure, access, and lighting layout can all be customized. The visible rectangle is only the starting geometry.

Cabinets can preserve a consistent sign band while allowing each tenant to carry its own graphics.

Cabinet formats

The same basic construction can solve very different visibility problems.

How the cabinet mounts, how many faces it has, and whether the graphics need to change later are more important than the generic product name.

The face, retainer, and cabinet depth have to work together; they are not independent choices.

Face material and graphics

The face determines what people see. The cabinet determines whether it stays serviceable.

Rigid acrylic and polycarbonate faces are common on smaller and medium cabinets. Polycarbonate adds impact resistance where the sign is exposed to damage. Larger cabinets may use a tensioned flexible face to reduce weight and eliminate large unsupported rigid sheets.

Graphics may be produced with translucent vinyl, printed translucent media, routed and backed openings, applied opaque details, or replaceable tenant panels. Face color and print density affect nighttime brightness, so the lighting layout cannot be finalized without considering the actual artwork.

A face that looks perfect on a monitor can still light unevenly if colors, opacity, cabinet depth, or LED spacing are not planned together. We test the finished sign—not just the artwork file.

Behind the face

A cabinet is a weather-exposed electrical enclosure that must also be easy to service.

Good cabinet construction balances stiffness, drainage, access, lighting depth, electrical separation, and the realities of the wall or support structure.

Aluminum body and framing

Sheet, extrusion, and internal bracing are selected to keep the cabinet straight without making service panels unnecessarily heavy.

Face retainers

Retainers secure the face, allow removal for service, and manage the edge condition that customers see in daylight.

Drainage and weather management

Exterior cabinets need controlled drainage and protected wiring. Trying to make a sign permanently airtight often traps the moisture that inevitably enters.

Service access

Hinges, removable faces, raceways, access panels, and power-supply placement are planned so a future repair does not require destroying the sign.

Mounting and structure

The cabinet, wall, monument, pole, or support frame must share load safely. Anchors and attachment points are designed for the actual substrate.

Sign-side electrical system

S2 completes internal and low-voltage wiring. A licensed electrician provides the branch circuit, breaker, and final building-power termination.

Even illumination is designed

LED spacing, cabinet depth, and face transmission control the finished light.

More LED modules do not automatically create a better sign. The modules need the right beam pattern, distance from the face, spacing, power loading, and relationship to the artwork. A shallow cabinet, dark printed face, or complex color field may need a different layout than a deep cabinet with a simple white face.

S2 lays out the LEDs for the cabinet that actually exists, routes and secures the wiring, sizes the power supplies, and tests the face before the sign leaves the shop. The goal is consistent illumination without obvious hot spots, stripes, dark corners, or overloaded components.

Address + objective

We start with the location, logo, viewing direction, deadline, budget, and any existing sign information.

Site review

We review the sign band, mounting surface, access, power location, landlord criteria, and likely sign-code limits.

Field survey

Dimensions, structure, cabinet condition, face retainers, wiring access, and installation logistics are verified on site.

Design + price

Cabinet size, face system, graphics, mounting, lighting, permit path, and project scope become one coordinated proposal.

Approval + permit

S2 coordinates landlord review, submits the sign permit, and arranges engineering when the structure or jurisdiction requires it.

Fabrication

The cabinet, face, retainers, paint, LEDs, wiring, labeling, and service access are built and tested in Loveland.

Installation

S2 installs the sign and coordinates building-power work with a licensed electrician when needed.

Inspection + service

We support required final inspections and remain available for faces, lighting, controls, and future tenant changes.

Keep the useful structure

Repair, re-face, retrofit, or replace?

A dark or dated cabinet is not automatically a failed cabinet. The right recommendation depends on the frame, face, retainers, mounting, wiring, water intrusion, paint, and whether the existing sign still fits the property’s current needs.

  • Repair: correct a power supply, LED, wiring, photocell, retainer, or localized face problem.
  • Re-face: replace the visible face and graphics while keeping a serviceable cabinet.
  • Retrofit: remove fluorescent or outdated lighting and install a current LED system.
  • Rebuild: replace major cabinet components while preserving a valuable support or permitted location.
  • Replace: start over when structure, access, water damage, size, or appearance makes re-use a poor investment.
A sound cabinet structure can often support a new face, new graphics, or a complete lighting retrofit.
Size alone does not determine cabinet pricing; face construction, lighting, mounting, access, and permitting matter just as much.

What changes the cost of an LED sign cabinet?

Cabinet pricing is built from the actual sign system rather than a generic square-foot number. Two cabinets with the same visible dimensions can require very different structures, face materials, access methods, and electrical work.

What is an LED sign cabinet?

An LED sign cabinet is an internally illuminated enclosure with one or two sign faces. The cabinet contains the LEDs, power supplies, wiring, framing, drainage, and service access; the face carries the visible graphics.

When is a cabinet better than channel letters?

A cabinet is often better when the logo needs to remain inside one complete shape, the wall cannot support many individual penetrations, the property already has a cabinet structure, or the sign needs a replaceable face for future tenant changes.

What materials are used for cabinet faces?

Face material depends on size, impact exposure, graphics, and service needs. Common options include acrylic, polycarbonate, flexible face material, routed aluminum with acrylic details, and removable tenant panels.

Can an old fluorescent cabinet be converted to LED?

Often, yes. If the cabinet structure and face are still serviceable, S2 can remove fluorescent lamps and ballasts, correct wiring or moisture problems, and install a properly spaced LED system.

Does S2 handle the permit and UL label?

Yes. S2 prepares sign-permit applications where required and is authorized to apply UL labels to qualifying electric signs. We use UL-listed components and follow the applicable construction and labeling processes.

Who connects the cabinet to building power?

S2 completes the cabinet’s internal and low-voltage sign wiring. A licensed electrician handles the branch circuit, breaker, and final termination to building power; S2 can coordinate an electrician we regularly work with.

Can a cabinet face be changed without replacing the cabinet?

Usually. Tenant changes, rebrands, faded graphics, cracked faces, and dated artwork can often be handled with a new face or panel if the cabinet remains structurally sound.

How long does a sign-cabinet project take?

The schedule depends on survey work, landlord approval, permitting, engineering if needed, face material, cabinet size, electrical readiness, fabrication, and installation access. S2 provides a project-specific schedule after reviewing the address and scope.
