Choose by need
A larger list of substrates does not automatically produce a better sign. These questions narrow the field quickly.
Beyond the sheet
The substrate gets most of the attention because it is easy to name. In the field, failures are just as likely to begin at an unsupported edge, an undersized frame, a loose fastener, an unsealed penetration, a post that moved, or a graphic finish that did not match the exposure.
S2 plans the panel as one component inside a complete system. That may include a welded frame, wood or metal posts, stand-offs, wall rails, a monument opening, cabinet retainers, concealed fasteners, anti-vandal hardware, or a portable base.
When future changes are likely, the smartest detail may be the one that lets the next panel come out cleanly without rebuilding everything around it.
Face production
S2 uses the appropriate combination of print, laminate, cut vinyl, paint, second-surface graphics, reflective film, routed components, and specialty face materials rather than treating every panel the same.
Useful for full-color commercial graphics. Ink, film, laminate, panel preparation, and edge conditions work together.
Strong for solid-color lettering, logos, borders, regulatory copy, and information that benefits from crisp color separation.
Applied behind clear acrylic so the face protects the graphics and the front remains smooth.
Returns directed light toward the viewer for parking, traffic, safety, and nighttime identification.
Useful when a fabricated or routed panel needs a controlled base color, edge finish, or architectural coating.
Flat panels can carry dimensional letters, routed accents, stand-off layers, or replaceable tenant modules.
Project process
A small temporary sign may compress these steps. A permanent freestanding system may require site review, permits, engineering, fabrication, and installation.
We identify message, location, viewing distance, expected service life, change frequency, and budget.
Wall, frame, cabinet, posts, grade, setbacks, utilities, wind exposure, access, and permit conditions are checked.
Substrate, thickness, graphic method, frame, hardware, edge treatment, and installation approach are specified together.
Copy hierarchy and contrast are tested at the intended scale—not only on a monitor.
Final artwork and construction move through landlord or municipal review when required.
Printing, laminating, cutting, routing, painting, assembly, or specialty sourcing follows the approved specification.
Posts, frames, fasteners, stand-offs, cabinet retainers, or wall hardware are set for the real substrate and exposure.
The finished work is checked and photographed; replaceable panels and future changes remain serviceable.
Price + timing
Send the address, a photo of where it will go, the finished size if known, the message or logo, whether it is temporary or permanent, and how it should mount. If an existing frame or cabinet is being reused, include straight-on photos and opening dimensions.
That information is more useful than guessing at a material name.
Common questions
There is no single best substrate. ACM is a strong general-purpose choice for flat commercial panels, solid aluminum is useful when the panel needs metal strength or reflective graphics, MDO adds thickness and fastener holding for framed post systems, and polycarbonate is preferred for many illuminated cabinet faces. The mounting and expected service life matter as much as the printed face.
Solid aluminum is metal all the way through. ACM uses thin aluminum skins bonded to a lightweight core. ACM is flatter and lighter for its size, while solid aluminum handles exposed edges, small parking and regulatory signs, direct fastening, and reflective applications especially well.
Not as a blanket rule. S2 selects the graphic process around the substrate and use. Many exterior panels receive printed or cut vinyl graphics with a compatible overlaminate; other projects use paint, second-surface graphics, reflective film, routed copy, or specialty faces. The goal is the correct finished sign, not forcing every material through one production method.
Often, yes. Replaceable panels are one of the main advantages of a well-designed post, wall, monument, cabinet, or tenant-sign system. We evaluate the existing opening, attachment method, frame condition, panel thickness, and future change frequency before specifying the replacement.
They often do when they are permanent, large, illuminated, close to a property line, or installed in a regulated sign area. Temporary commercial real estate signs may follow different rules. S2 checks the address and handles required sign permits and engineering coordination.
Service life depends on the substrate, face finish, sun exposure, wind, moisture, edge treatment, mounting, and whether the graphic layer is intended to be temporary or long term. We avoid generic lifespan promises and specify the panel around the actual project.
Yes. Reflective film can be applied to the full background or selected graphics when nighttime visibility is needed. Reflective signage still depends on the angle and source of approaching light; it is not self-illuminating.
S2 is a custom sign company, not a sheet-material warehouse. Our normal work is a finished sign or complete sign system: design, substrate, graphics, framing or mounting, permitting when needed, and installation.
