What should a monument sign accomplish?

A monument sign identifies a property at the place where a driver or visitor has to make a decision. It may announce a business, name a development, organize multiple tenants, mark a driveway, reinforce an architectural identity, or do several of those jobs at once.

Unlike a wall sign, a monument has to create its own structure and relationship to the ground. The sign cannot be designed responsibly without considering the entrance, grade, landscaping, utility conditions, traffic approach, viewing angle, and municipal rules.

Low profile does not mean low consequence.

A monument may be shorter than a pylon, but it often requires more coordination among survey information, property boundaries, engineering, excavation, concrete, electrical service, masonry or cladding, landscaping, and final inspection.

Monument formats

The visible face can be fabricated many different ways.

The right format depends on architecture, tenant turnover, nighttime visibility, sign-code limits, available maintenance access, and the useful life expected from the structure.

Location before decoration

Where the monument sits may matter more than what it looks like.

A strong design placed behind mature landscaping, outside a driver’s natural view, inside a sight triangle, over a utility conflict, or too close to the right-of-way is not a workable sign plan. Site constraints need to be identified before the structure is finalized.

A preliminary desktop review can identify likely issues, but final placement normally requires a field survey and reliable site information. Utility locating and engineering are not interchangeable with guessing from an aerial image.

Structure below the finished sign

Wind load, footing, soil, frost, and support design are part of the sign.

The visible monument may look solid and simple, but its stability depends on the connection between the cabinet or frame, vertical supports, base plates or embedded members, reinforcement, and concrete footing.

S2 works with an engineering firm when stamped drawings are required. Footing dimensions are based on the actual sign and site—not a generic depth copied from a previous job.
