Halo-lit—also called reverse-lit—channel letters have solid faces and internal LEDs aimed toward the wall. The reflected light creates a glow around each letter while the letter itself remains dimensional and defined.
The quality of the effect depends on much more than the LEDs. Letter depth, back construction, standoff distance, wall color, wall texture, mounting, ambient light, and spacing all determine whether the halo looks controlled or accidental.

What makes halo-lit letters look different?
A front-lit letter sends light through a translucent face. A reverse-lit letter turns that lighting direction around. LEDs inside the letter face backward through a translucent or open back, and the letter is held away from the wall so the light can spread before it reaches the surface.
The customer sees two things at once: a solid dimensional letter in the foreground and a field of reflected light around it. That separation gives halo-lit letters their architectural character. The daytime sign can be painted metal, brushed metal, or another solid finish, while the nighttime sign gains depth without making the front face itself glow.
Halo lighting is especially effective for professional offices, medical buildings, financial services, hospitality, municipal features, campuses, higher-end retail, and properties where the sign needs to feel integrated with the architecture rather than simply bright.
Halo-lit is not automatically “better” than front-lit. It is quieter, more dependent on the wall, and sometimes less readable from long distances. The right choice depends on the building and the job the sign has to do.
The wall is the illuminated face
Which wall surfaces work best for a clean halo?
The LEDs do not illuminate the viewer directly; they illuminate the building. Wall color, texture, reflectivity, joints, projections, and distance from the letters therefore become part of the sign specification.
A realistic night rendering should be based on the actual wall. Replacing the wall with a smooth white background during design can create an approval image the installed sign can never reproduce.

How are halo-lit channel letters built?
A typical reverse-lit letter uses a solid fabricated face and returns, a translucent back or rear opening, internal LED modules arranged to throw light backward, standoffs that establish the letter-to-wall distance, low-voltage wiring, power supplies, mounting studs, and a drilling or mounting pattern for the site.
The back needs to transmit and distribute light while keeping the electrical system protected and serviceable. The letter depth must provide room for the LED layout, wiring, backs, attachment, and the chosen finish. The standoffs must hold the assembly consistently away from the wall and resist wind and weather without becoming visually distracting.
S2 is authorized to apply UL labels to qualifying signs, uses UL-listed components, and completes the sign-side wiring. The letters are illuminated and inspected in the shop before installation. A licensed electrician completes the building branch circuit, breaker, and final power connection.

How are reverse-lit letters mounted without ruining the halo?
The mounting method has to support the letters, conceal or organize wiring, preserve a consistent air gap, and avoid placing visible hardware or structure inside the light field.
Individual mounting
Each letter attaches directly to the wall on studs and standoffs. This is often the cleanest approach because every letter can cast its own halo without a large structure behind it.
Raceway mounting
A raceway can simplify wiring and wall penetrations when the building requires it, but the raceway interrupts the wall and may receive the reflected light. Its size, color, and placement must be designed—not hidden in the notes.
Backer mounting
A backer can create a smooth, controlled surface on masonry, corrugated metal, or visually busy walls. It also changes the sign into a larger assembled composition and may affect the allowable sign area.
Remote power supplies
Power supplies may be located behind the wall, inside an accessible raceway or enclosure, or in another serviceable location. Access and wire-run length influence the design.
Wall penetrations
Studs, wiring, sleeves, seals, and anchors must match the wall construction. Penetration planning is part of weather management and long-term serviceability.
Consistent standoff
Uneven walls or inconsistent spacers change the halo width from letter to letter. Field conditions must be measured and corrected before the lighting can look uniform.

The City of Johnstown letters sit on a prominent monument wall near I-25. The project demonstrates why reverse-lit letters must be designed as part of the architecture: the letterforms, dark finish, substantial depth, standoff shadows, wall tone, and long horizontal composition all contribute before the LEDs are even turned on.

What does a halo-lit channel-letter project involve?
The wall and mounting conditions receive more attention early because the reflected-light surface is part of the final sign.
Address + architecture
We start with the location, logo, wall photos, desired appearance, viewing direction, budget, and timing.
Wall evaluation
Color, texture, joints, material, interior access, electrical conditions, and likely halo behavior are reviewed.
Field survey
Measurements, attachment conditions, standoff feasibility, access, power location, and obstructions are verified.
Lighting concept
Letter depth, face finish, halo color, standoff, scale, mounting method, and wall relationship are developed together.
Approval + permit
After scope and deposit, S2 develops the approval package, coordinates landlord review, and submits the permit.

What changes the cost of reverse-lit letters?
Halo-lit letters generally contain more fabricated metal and more mounting detail than a simple front-lit set. The wall may also require a backer, special anchors, remote power-supply planning, or more careful wiring access.

When halo-lit may not be the best choice
A premium effect still has to solve the visibility problem.
A dark, deeply textured, cluttered, or highly reflective wall may not produce the clean halo the customer expects. A long viewing distance may call for direct face illumination. A tight budget may be better spent on larger front-lit letters than smaller reverse-lit letters.
We will say that plainly during design. The goal is not to sell the most complicated letter; it is to choose the sign that works for the site and still looks right years later.
A useful inquiry includes a straight-on wall photo and at least one wider image showing the approach. For halo-lit letters, the wall is as important as the logo.
Service and repair
Uneven halos usually point to a specific physical cause.
A dark section, narrow halo, color shift, flicker, or letter sitting too close to the wall can result from failed modules, power-supply problems, wiring, water intrusion, damaged backs, loose standoffs, or prior repairs that changed the original layout.

What are halo-lit or reverse-lit channel letters?
Halo-lit and reverse-lit are two names for channel letters that direct LED light toward the wall behind the letter. The reflected light creates a visible halo around a solid-faced dimensional letter.
Why are they called reverse-lit?
The light travels out the back of the letter rather than through the front face. The face remains solid while the wall becomes part of the nighttime lighting effect.
What wall surfaces work best for halo lighting?
Smooth, light-colored, matte surfaces usually create the cleanest and most even halo. Brick, stone, corrugated metal, deep joints, dark paint, and glossy materials can create texture, reduce contrast, or produce uneven reflections. Those effects are not always bad, but they must be designed intentionally.
How far do halo-lit letters stand off the wall?
The standoff distance is selected for the letter depth, LED layout, wall material, desired halo width, wind and attachment requirements, and manufacturer details. It is not a decorative spacer chosen independently of the lighting system.
Can halo-lit letters also have illuminated faces?
Yes, but that becomes a combination-lit channel letter. A true reverse-lit letter normally has a solid face and directs its primary illumination onto the wall.
Do halo-lit letters need to be individually mounted?
Individual mounting is common because it allows each letter to cast its own halo directly onto the wall. A raceway or backer can be used when the building or landlord requires it, but the added structure becomes part of the reflected-light field and must be designed carefully.
