Plain-English sign answers
Questions are the point of this page.
Search the page or browse by topic. The answers are written for people buying, managing, repairing, or approving commercial signs—not for people trying to pass a sign-industry vocabulary test.

Starting a sign project
What information should I send first?
Send the project address, a photo of the site or existing sign, your logo, a short explanation of what you need, a realistic budget range, and the desired completion date. That is enough to begin a useful conversation.
Do I need to know the correct sign terminology?
No. Describe the result you want in ordinary language. S2 can explain whether the project points toward channel letters, a cabinet, dimensional letters, a panel, window graphics, a monument, wayfinding, repair, or another direction.
Will S2 visit the site?
Once the project has a realistic scope, budget, and schedule, S2 performs field measurement or a site survey as needed. Early conversations may begin with maps, photos, drawings, and landlord documents.
Can S2 help with landlord sign criteria?
Yes. Send the lease exhibit, master sign program, or property criteria when available. S2 can compare the proposed sign with those requirements and prepare approval material as part of the project.
Pricing, design, and timelines
How much does a business sign cost?
Cost depends on size, materials, quantity, lighting, engineering, permit fees, wall or site conditions, access equipment, electrical preparation, finish, and installation. S2 explains the variables and gives a project-specific price after the scope is understood.
Can I get an instant quote?
Not for most custom sign work. An instant number without the address, scale, construction, mounting, approval path, and access conditions is usually a guess. Simple repeat products may be easier to price, but exterior and fabricated signs require more context.
Does S2 provide free design proofs?
Early visual direction may be part of the sales conversation, but detailed design and revision work begins after the scope and deposit are established. S2 does not offer unlimited finished design work as a blanket free service.
How long does a sign project take?
Interior graphics and non-permit panels can move faster than exterior signs. Landlord approval, municipal permits, engineering, electrical preparation, material lead times, fabrication, weather, and installation access all affect the actual schedule.
Why do two signs that look similar have very different prices?
The visible face may hide major differences in metal thickness, internal framing, illumination, power supplies, face material, mounting, drainage, finish, service access, engineering, footings, equipment, and electrical work. Useful life and future repairability also matter.
Permits, engineering, and electrical work
Does S2 pull sign permits?
Yes. S2 prepares and submits sign-permit applications where required and can obtain local credentials in Colorado jurisdictions where additional registration is needed.
When is engineering required?
Freestanding signs, large sign structures, some wall conditions, and projects with significant wind or footing loads may require stamped drawings. S2 coordinates with an engineering firm for structural and footing documents when needed.
Is S2 authorized to apply UL labels?
Yes. S2 is certified to apply UL labels and follows the applicable UL construction and labeling processes. Components used in electric signs are UL listed.
What electrical work does S2 perform?
S2 handles the sign body, LEDs, power supplies, drivers, sign-side wiring, low-voltage wiring, fixtures, controls, and related installation work. A licensed electrician handles new branch circuits, breakers, panel work, underground feeder work, and final building-power termination.
Electric signs and illumination
What is the difference between front-lit and halo-lit channel letters?
Front-lit letters illuminate through translucent faces toward the viewer. Halo-lit or reverse-lit letters have solid faces and direct light toward the wall behind them. Combination letters use both effects.
Do channel letters have to be mounted on a raceway?
No. They may be individually mounted, raceway mounted, or installed on a backer. The wall construction, landlord criteria, wiring access, number of penetrations, service access, appearance, and budget affect the choice.
What is a push-thru acrylic sign?
A metal or other opaque face is routed, and machined acrylic letters or shapes project through the openings. Light can illuminate the face, edges, or both, creating a dimensional cabinet or blade-sign effect.
Can S2 convert old fluorescent or glass-neon signs to LED?
Yes, when the existing sign body is a good retrofit candidate. S2 does not repair traditional glass-neon systems or beer signs; commercial neon systems are evaluated for conversion to 12-volt LED modules or another appropriate LED system.
Sign repair and exterior lighting
Will S2 repair a sign built by another company?
Yes. S2 services signs it built and signs built by other companies. Diagnosis begins with the symptom, sign type, photos, location, access, and the condition of the overall structure.
Why is only part of my sign dark?
Common causes include failed LED modules, a failed power supply serving one section, loose wiring, moisture, damaged connectors, old fluorescent components, or problems created by an earlier repair. Diagnosis determines whether an isolated repair or broader retrofit makes sense.
How is commercial sign repair scheduled?
S2 responds to inquiries within one business day and schedules repair work around the actual problem, access, safety, required parts, equipment, and current workload. Send the address, photos, and a plain-language description so the first conversation can focus on the right next step.
Does S2 repair parking lot and exterior lighting?
Yes. Services include parking-lot pole lights, wall packs, canopy lights, soffit and entry lighting, fixture heads, arms, drivers, photocells, controls, poles, bases, J-bolts, impact damage, LED retrofits, and complete pole replacement. Whole-building interior-lighting packages are not the focus.
Commercial real estate sign program
What does the CRE sign program include?
The program combines portal ordering, organized stored inventory, qualifying recurring field service, completion photos, and account familiarity for commercial real estate brokerages and property teams.
How fast is standard CRE field service?
Qualifying routine install, maintenance, and removal orders within the regular Colorado scope carry a five-business-day standard. Custom fabrication, electric signs, permits, engineering, weather, access, and third-party delays can require a different schedule.
Where do existing CRE clients log in?
Visit s2signs.com/client-login/ or use the Client Login button in the main navigation. The standard WordPress login hands authenticated customers to the existing account-specific portal redirect.
Is brokerage inventory storage included?
Program customers can store standard panels, riders, frames, and related components at the Loveland facility without a separate storage charge. Inventory is organized by account, SKU, and bin location.
Materials, graphics, and installation
What is the difference between solid aluminum and ACM?
Solid aluminum is metal throughout and is useful where the panel itself needs greater durability or structural behavior. ACM has thin aluminum skins over a thermoplastic core; it is flatter and lighter for many commercial panel applications.
What is the difference between acrylic and polycarbonate?
Acrylic generally offers excellent optical clarity and polished appearance. Polycarbonate provides much greater impact resistance and is often selected for illuminated cabinet faces or locations where break resistance matters.
Does S2 offer vehicle wraps?
No. Vehicle wraps are a hard service boundary. S2 focuses on commercial signs, panels, graphics for buildings and surfaces, wayfinding, repair, exterior lighting, and related fabrication and installation.
Can window film provide complete privacy?
Frosted film obscures detail but may still show silhouettes depending on lighting and distance. Perforated window vinyl depends on lighting contrast and can reverse at night. The correct film depends on the actual privacy goal.
Does S2 install the signs and graphics it produces?
Yes. S2 handles installation for commercial sign and graphic projects, including access equipment, mounting, hardware, alignment, site coordination, and documentation. Specialty partners are coordinated where the scope requires them.
