Founded in 2010 · Sign work since 1998

A sign company built by someone who learned the work from the production floor up.

S2 Sign Company is a Loveland, Colorado custom sign shop led by founder Chad Smith. The company was formed in 2010 after twelve years of earlier sign-industry work spanning design, vinyl production, electric installation, and high-end fabrication.

The public site does not need a staged team portrait or a manufactured origin myth. The proof is the range of work, the technical depth behind it, and the standards carried from one project to the next.

The through-line

The company began in 2010. The craft began twelve years earlier.

Chad entered the sign trade in 1998 as a sign designer and junior vinyl technician. That work taught the fundamentals that still show up in larger projects: measure accurately, prepare the surface, align the graphic, control the details, and do not hide a bad decision behind speed.

The next stages moved into electric sign installation and then fabrication. Installation adds consequence: penetrations, anchors, weather, wiring, height, access, code, water management, and the reality that a mistake becomes part of someone else’s building. Fabrication adds responsibility for the object itself—the cabinet, letter, frame, face, lighting, finish, and serviceability.

S2 was formed in 2010 as a way to carry those lessons into a company where the standard could remain attached to the work rather than becoming a slogan used by a sales department.

The same shop handles small precision work and large exterior systems.

A short timeline

Four dates explain most of the story.

1998

Chad begins in the sign industry as a designer and junior vinyl technician, learning the production fundamentals before moving into electric installation and fabrication.

2010

S2 Sign Company is founded as a Colorado limited liability company, carrying twelve years of prior trade experience into the new operation.

2018

The commercial real estate brokerage portal goes online, beginning the long-running ordering and inventory system that supports S2’s largest recurring customer group.

2022

S2 moves into the current Loveland facility at 459 Denver Avenue, with more than 5,000 square feet of working fabrication space and room to expand temporarily for oversize projects.

Today

A small, focused team produces electric signs, dimensional work, panels, graphics, repair, CRE field service, and one-off custom fabrication for Colorado projects.

One career anchor

Ten-foot letters in St. Charles.

Before S2 was founded, Chad’s fabrication career included institutional and commercial work for companies such as Microsoft through Trademarx, Boeing, Chevron, Exxon, and Ameristar. One project remains the clearest illustration of the standard at scale.

The Ameristar Casino project in St. Charles, Missouri included ten-foot illuminated letters and a substantial lighted entry trellis. The work had to read from distance, illuminate consistently, withstand Midwest weather, integrate with the property architecture, and remain visually correct in daylight when the fabrication details were fully exposed.

More than twenty years later, the principal work remains at the property. The point is not to turn one old project into a trophy wall. It is to show what careful material, welding, finish, illumination, drainage, mounting, and installation decisions look like after weather has had decades to judge them.

The same discipline applies at a different scale to a coroplast panel, a lobby logo, a tenant face, or a repair. The materials and useful life change. The obligation to build the right version of that product does not.

A real production shop can solve projects that do not fit a simple catalog.

The Loveland operation

A fabrication shop—not a sales office routing every job elsewhere.

The current facility includes two laser cutters, multiple CNC routing and milling machines, a CNC lathe, vinyl and print production, welding and metal fabrication, paint and finishing capability, staging, racking, and the equipment required to install and service commercial signs.

Powder coating is the major finishing process not performed in-house; when a project specifies it, S2 uses a vetted local vendor. Specialty cast metal letters and plaques also come from qualified manufacturers because true casting is a focused manufacturing discipline. S2 remains responsible for design, specification, proofing, permitting when required, delivery review, and installation.

That is the honest version of “full service”: know what belongs in the shop, know what belongs with a specialist, and remain accountable for how the pieces become one finished project.

The team, briefly

Small enough for continuity. Capable enough for serious work.

S2 is a small dedicated team led by the founder. The website does not freeze the company into a staff roster that becomes outdated every time someone joins, changes roles, or leaves. Customers are buying the standard, the equipment, the process, the communication, and the finished work.

Owner-led standardsThe founder remains close to the production and installation quality that built the company.
Cross-trained operationA small team that understands more than one stage of the job loses less context between sales, production, and field work.
Account familiarityRecurring customers speak with people who know the account rather than starting from zero with a rotating representative.

The working standard

Specific promises are stronger than broad superlatives.

Tell the truth about the schedulePermits, weather, access, engineering, and third parties exist. A real schedule is more useful than aggressive optimism.
Explain the trade-offsMaterial, lighting, mounting, service life, appearance, budget, and future changes all deserve a clear conversation.
Build for the useful lifeThe right construction is not always the most expensive one. It is the one appropriate to what the sign is expected to do.
Guide without gatekeepingA customer should be able to ask a basic sign question without feeling that the vocabulary is being used against them.
Show real proofReal projects, process photos, and operational detail carry more weight than invented numbers or stock-photo claims.
Remain serviceableAccess to power supplies, faces, wiring, hardware, panels, and replacement parts should be considered before the sign is installed.
