Acrylic panels are common in reception areas, professional offices, directories, donor displays, suite signs, menu systems, interior brand walls, and layered dimensional assemblies. Clear material lets a wall finish remain part of the composition; frosted material softens it; opaque acrylic becomes a clean colored face.

The polished look comes with responsibilities. Acrylic expands, can crack at stressed holes, and can be scratched by poor cleaning. It should be detailed as a thermoplastic—not treated like a piece of glass or sheet metal.

Graphic methods

The cleanest face may put the graphics behind the panel.

Second-surface graphics are viewed through clear acrylic. That protects the color layer from direct touch and cleaning while giving the front a continuous gloss. The production file is reversed, and the material itself becomes part of the color and contrast calculation.

First-surface cut vinyl, printed film, paint, engraving, routed recesses, dimensional letters, and applied metal components are also possible. The method should fit the viewing distance, cleaning routine, replacement plan, and desired depth.

Mounting + movement

Acrylic needs support without being clamped into failure.

What is the difference between clear and frosted acrylic?

Clear acrylic allows the wall, graphics, and hardware behind it to remain visible. Frosted acrylic diffuses the view and reduces transparency, creating a softer architectural surface. Either can carry printed, painted, cut-vinyl, or dimensional components.

Can graphics go on the back of acrylic?

Yes. Second-surface graphics are applied or printed behind the clear face so the acrylic protects the image and the front remains smooth. The artwork may need to be produced in reverse and colors can appear different through the sheet.

Is acrylic suitable outdoors?

Exterior-grade acrylic can work outside when thickness, expansion, holes, hardware, edge finishing, and exposure are planned correctly. It is more brittle than polycarbonate, so impact-prone locations may need another material.

Does acrylic scratch?

It can. Cleaning method, handling, paper or film masking, installation tools, and the environment matter. Polished clear faces show scratches and dust more readily than frosted or opaque finishes.

Can acrylic panels be illuminated?

Yes. Acrylic can transmit or diffuse light in sign cabinets, edge-lit systems, backers, and specialty displays. The lighting design must account for thickness, color, opacity, diffusion, and distance from the LEDs.

How are acrylic panels mounted?

Common methods include stand-offs, concealed studs on attached components, rails, frames, through-holes with decorative hardware, adhesive systems, and backer assemblies. Holes and hardware need room for thermal movement.

Is acrylic the same as polycarbonate?

No. Both are clear thermoplastics, but acrylic is generally valued for optical clarity and polished appearance, while polycarbonate is chosen when greater impact resistance and flexibility matter.

Can S2 cut acrylic into custom shapes?

Yes. CNC and laser processes can create letters, panels, openings, and layered shapes. Very sharp inside corners, thin bridges, holes near edges, and stress concentration still require practical design adjustment.
