Combination channel letters illuminate through the front face and cast light onto the wall behind the letter. They combine the direct readability of front-lit letters with the depth and architectural presence of a halo.

That extra effect also adds design and electrical complexity. Face brightness, halo strength, colors, wall surface, letter depth, standoff, mounting, power supplies, and service access all need to be balanced as one sign—not treated as two independent lighting systems.

How do combination channel letters work?

The front of the letter uses a translucent face, much like a front-lit channel letter. The rear uses a translucent back or controlled opening, like a reverse-lit letter. Internal LEDs are arranged so light can travel in both directions without creating dark areas, uncontrolled hot spots, or an electrical system that is difficult to service.

More light is not automatically better

The face and halo have to support each other.

A combination letter can fail visually even when every LED is working. If the face is much brighter than the halo, the reflected light disappears. If the halo is too strong or too saturated, it can muddy the letter edges and compete with the face. If the wall is dark or heavily textured, the rear lighting may add cost without adding much visible benefit.

The correct balance depends on the viewing distance, ambient light, face material, LED color, wall color, letter depth, standoff distance, stroke width, and how much of the sign is logo versus text. A large restaurant logo on pale stucco behaves differently from narrow professional-office letters on dark brick.

Combination lighting is worth considering when both effects have a real job. It should not be selected only because it has the longest feature list.

What color combinations are possible?

The two light paths can use the same color or intentionally different colors. The right choice has to work in daylight, at night, against the actual wall, and within landlord and municipal illumination rules.

White face + white haloThe most neutral and usually the easiest to balance. It emphasizes form and architecture without introducing competing hues.
Brand-color face + white haloKeeps the logo color forward while using a neutral halo to separate the letter from the wall.
White face + colored haloMaintains bright direct readability while using the reflected light as the brand accent.
Two brand colorsCan be effective for a simple logo, but saturation, brightness, and wall color must be tested so the colors remain distinct.
Day-and-night face + haloA dark daytime face can illuminate after dark while the rear adds another light field. This is visually rich and must be carefully controlled.

Colored LEDs and colored face materials do not produce identical color in every condition. Samples, component specifications, wall color, ambient lighting, and realistic expectations matter more than a glowing computer rendering.

How do the wall and mounting method affect combination letters?

The front face will remain visible even when the wall is imperfect, but the value of the rear lighting depends on the surface behind it. Mounting decisions therefore have both structural and visual consequences.

Smooth, light walls

These provide the cleanest reflected-light field and make it easier to balance a visible halo with the front face.

Brick, stone, or ribbed metal

Texture breaks up the halo. That can create character, but the customer should see an honest rendering based on the actual surface.

Individual mounting

Often creates the cleanest result because each letter can cast light directly onto the building with minimal structure in the field.

Raceway mounting

A raceway can simplify wiring and penetrations, but it may block or receive the rear light. Its shape and finish become part of the nighttime design.

Fabricated backer

A backer can create a controlled halo surface on an unsuitable wall and organize the wiring, but it also changes the permitted sign area and overall composition.

Consistent standoffs

Uneven mounting distance changes halo width and brightness. The wall must be surveyed and the hardware planned for repeatable spacing.

How is the construction different?

A combination letter generally needs a translucent front face, fabricated returns, a rear light-transmitting surface or opening, LED modules arranged for both directions, internal wire management, standoffs, mounting hardware, and power supplies sized for the total connected load.

The lighting may use separate module groups or carefully placed modules depending on the letter design and component system. Either way, the face and halo should be serviceable without turning every future repair into a complete sign removal.

S2 is authorized to apply UL labels to qualifying electric signs, uses UL-listed components, completes the sign-side electrical work, and shop-tests the lighting before installation. A licensed electrician handles the branch circuit, breaker, and final connection to building power.

What does a combination-letter project involve?

The process follows the same project path as other channel letters, with added attention to the wall, color balance, connected load, and how the two lighting systems will be accessed later.

Address + brand

We begin with the site, logo, building photos, landlord criteria, lighting goals, timing, and budget.

Wall + visibility review

Viewing distance, ambient light, surface color and texture, sign area, and local illumination limits are reviewed.

Field survey

Measurements, wall construction, access, power location, attachment, standoff conditions, and obstructions are verified.

Effect development

Face color, halo color, brightness relationship, letter depth, mounting, and daytime finish are developed together.

Approval + permit

After scope and deposit, S2 coordinates customer and landlord approval and submits the sign permit.

Why do combination letters cost more?

The letter has more illuminated surfaces, more internal planning, more components, more wiring, more connected load, and tighter mounting requirements. The site may also need a backer or additional electrical capacity to make the halo useful.

When the simpler option wins

Combination lighting should earn its place.

If the storefront needs maximum readability, larger front-lit letters may provide more value than adding a halo. If the architecture and wall are the main story, a properly designed reverse-lit set may look cleaner than an illuminated face and halo together.

Service after installation

Two lighting directions mean the repair diagnosis must separate the systems.

A combination letter may have a face-lighting problem, a halo-lighting problem, or a shared power and wiring problem. A useful diagnosis identifies which effect failed, whether the issue is isolated to one letter, and whether prior repairs changed the original LED layout.

What are combination-lit channel letters?

Combination-lit channel letters use two lighting directions in the same letter: light through a translucent front face and light from the back onto the wall. The result combines direct face visibility with a reflected halo.

Are combination-lit letters always brighter than front-lit letters?

They produce more total light effects, but brightness is not the same as readability. Face transmission, halo strength, wall color, viewing distance, ambient light, letter size, and color choices must be balanced so one effect does not overpower the other.

Can the face and halo be different colors?

What wall surfaces work with combination lighting?

The front-lit face remains visible on almost any appropriate wall, but the halo still depends on the wall surface. Smooth, light-colored surfaces create the cleanest halo; dark, textured, ribbed, or reflective surfaces change the effect and may make the additional rear lighting less valuable.

Do combination letters require more power and service planning?
