Two names, one broad sign family

What is the difference between a pole sign and a pylon sign?

In everyday sign-industry use, the terms overlap. A pole sign typically shows one or more vertical support poles beneath the cabinet. A pylon sign often has a wider enclosed support, architectural cladding, or a full-height structure that integrates the faces and support system.

Both are freestanding signs designed to be read from farther away than a typical monument. They are used where a building sits back from the road, traffic moves quickly, several tenants share one property, or vehicles and landscaping would block a low sign.

The engineering and permit matter more than the label.

Whether the project is called a pole sign, pylon sign, high-rise sign, tenant pylon, or roadside cabinet, S2 evaluates the visible faces, support structure, foundation, height, wind area, access, and jurisdiction as one system.

Height helps the sign clear nearby buildings and parking areas, but the useful height is controlled by code, approach views, and structure.
A sign is successful when the viewer sees it early enough, recognizes it, reads it, and still has time to enter the property.

Visibility is a timing problem

How much information can a driver actually read?

A pole sign may be visible for a long distance but still fail if the copy is too small, the tenant list is too dense, the contrast is weak, or the sign appears too late in the approach. Road speed and decision distance limit how much information belongs on the face.

Adding more tenant names does not create more visibility. The face has a finite amount of readable space, and the highest-value information needs the strongest hierarchy.

Pole and pylon formats

The structure and face system should match the property.

A single business near a highway, a multi-tenant retail center, and an older property with a valuable existing pole require different sign systems even if each is casually called a pylon.

Existing sign rights and structures

Do not remove an old pole sign before understanding what can be preserved.

An existing sign may occupy a permitted location or height that current code would not allow for a new structure. It may also have a foundation or pole that appears reusable but lacks documentation, has hidden corrosion, or was altered over decades.

S2 reviews the jurisdiction and physical sign before recommending removal, cabinet replacement, face changes, structural modification, or reuse. The goal is to preserve genuine value without building new work on an unknown or unsafe assumption.

Code status

Local rules may treat face replacement differently from cabinet enlargement, structural alteration, relocation, or complete removal.

Foundation information

Original drawings, pole dimensions, concrete size, reinforcement, soil assumptions, and prior modifications may be unknown.

Corrosion and fatigue

Base sections, welds, access openings, water traps, buried steel, fasteners, and cabinet attachments need physical review.

New wind area

A larger or differently shaped cabinet may impose loads the existing pole and foundation were never designed to carry.

Electrical condition

Conduit, disconnects, grounding, branch circuits, internal wiring, and access may need correction before a new face or retrofit.

Practical reuse

Reuse is worthwhile when the location, support, foundation, and code status have more value than the cost and risk of preserving them.

A tall existing sign can represent substantial structural and permitting value—but only after its condition and legal status are understood.

Structure and engineering

The sign face is the sail. The support and footing resist the load.

Tall freestanding signs require an engineered path from the cabinet and face area through the framing, poles, base, reinforcing, and concrete into the ground. Sign height, face area, wind exposure, support spacing, soil assumptions, and site conditions all affect the design.

What is the difference between a pole sign and a pylon sign?

The terms are often used interchangeably. A pole sign usually has one or more visible support poles; a pylon sign often encloses or integrates the supports into a wider architectural structure. Both are tall freestanding signs intended for greater viewing distance.

When is a pole or pylon sign the right choice?

It is most useful when the building sits far from the road, traffic moves quickly, the site has a large parking field, multiple tenants need roadside identification, or a low monument sign would be hidden by vehicles, grade, or landscaping.

Does S2 design new foundations and structural supports?

Yes. S2 coordinates stamped engineering when required and fabricates the sign structure to the approved design. Foundation dimensions, support members, welds, plates, and connections are based on the actual sign and site.

Can an existing pole sign be reused?

Sometimes. Existing poles, foundations, cabinets, and permitted sign locations can have substantial value, but they need to be evaluated before reuse. Corrosion, unknown foundations, undocumented alterations, structural damage, size changes, and code status all affect the decision.

Can a nonconforming existing sign be replaced at the same size?

Not automatically. Some existing signs have legal nonconforming status that may be affected by removal, enlargement, structural alteration, vacancy, or local rules. S2 reviews the jurisdiction before recommending a change that could sacrifice a valuable existing sign right.

Do pole signs require a permit and engineering?

Most new pole and pylon signs require a sign permit, and many require stamped structural or foundation drawings. Electrical work and final inspections may also apply. S2 coordinates the sign permit and engineering path.

Who handles the electrical connection?

S2 fabricates and wires the sign-side system and is authorized to apply UL labels to qualifying electric signs. A licensed electrician handles the branch circuit, breaker, and final connection to building power; S2 can coordinate an electrician we regularly work with.

How long does a pole or pylon project take?

The schedule depends on survey work, sign-code limits, engineering, permitting, utility and site coordination, fabrication, foundation work, concrete cure time, electrical readiness, lifting equipment, installation, and inspection.
