From screen to physical object

A digital logo has no weight, thickness, fasteners, or gravity. The installed logo does.

Vector artwork can contain hairline strokes, floating dots, overlapping transparent shapes, gradients, and tiny negative spaces because a screen does not have to hold them on a wall. Dimensional fabrication introduces thickness, tool diameter, bend radius, stud placement, edge finish, seams, thermal movement, and the need to survive handling.

S2 starts by preserving what makes the logo recognizable. We then decide which components should be separate, layered, joined, simplified, printed, painted, fabricated, or carried by a backer. The result should feel like the same brand—only now it belongs in the architecture.

Material systems

The logo does not have to choose one material.

The most successful custom logos often use each material where it performs best.

Painted aluminum

Strong for exterior letters, custom colors, light weight, fabricated depth, and long-term commercial use.

Acrylic

Strong for clear layers, bright color, polished edges, small components, interior signs, and controlled transparency.

Stainless and decorative metals

Useful when the actual metal finish is part of the identity: brushed, satin, polished, warm, traditional, or architectural.

Backer panels

Acrylic, metal, ACM, or custom fabricated backers provide contrast, carry small pieces, reduce penetrations, and simplify installation.

Carved HDU

Ideal for sandblasted-looking backgrounds, relief, texture, routed borders, dimensional scenes, and custom monument faces.

Sign-specific lighting

Halo-lit components, edge lighting, lit backers, or push-thru elements can add controlled illumination when the site supports it.

Logo components are evaluated as real pieces with edges, mounting area, and handling requirements.

Scale + detail

A detail that works at 24 inches may fail at 8 inches—or disappear at 80 feet.

Dimensional logos must be judged at two distances. Up close, the customer sees edge quality, finish, hardware, layer alignment, and how cleanly the shapes meet. From the actual approach, the viewer sees only silhouette, contrast, spacing, and hierarchy.

S2 reviews minimum stroke widths, counters, isolated components, face area for studs, wall contrast, the relationship between the icon and wordmark, and whether the approved logo needs a sign-specific lockup. A logo can remain faithful while being reorganized to work better on a narrow wall, monument, reception desk, or building fascia.

The objective is not to force every digital detail into material. It is to preserve the brand characteristics the viewer actually recognizes.

Creates the cleanest wall integration but requires accurate patterns and enough mounting area in every separate component.

Grouped assemblies

Small letters or symbols can be preassembled on hidden rails or a backer to keep spacing controlled.

Useful when the logo should appear to float while small pieces remain mechanically connected.

Opaque backers

Provide contrast, simplify irregular walls, carry lighting, or create a deliberate sign shape around the logo.

Stand-offs and shadows

Controlled distance from the wall adds depth and may strengthen the logo even without illumination.

Illuminated or mechanically complex logos need removable components, accessible power supplies, and a realistic repair path.

Can you make my exact logo three-dimensional?

Usually, but a strong physical version may require small engineering changes. Very fine strokes, tiny counters, isolated dots, gradients, and overlapping shapes need a construction strategy that preserves the brand without creating fragile or unmountable pieces.

What file do you need?

Vector artwork such as AI, EPS, SVG, or a clean PDF is ideal because it preserves exact curves and proportions at any size. If only a bitmap image is available, S2 can evaluate whether it is sufficient or whether the logo needs to be redrawn.

Can one logo use several materials?

Yes. Mixed-material construction is often the best way to preserve color and hierarchy. Metal may provide the primary wordmark, acrylic may create a colored icon or clear layer, and a backer may unify small pieces or provide contrast.

Can gradients be reproduced?

A physical material cannot reproduce every digital effect by itself. Gradients may be handled through print, translucent graphics, paint techniques, layered components, lighting, or a deliberate simplification. We recommend the method that still reads correctly at the intended distance.

Can a dimensional logo be moved later?

Sometimes. A backer-mounted assembly is generally easier to relocate than dozens of individually stud-mounted pieces. The wall condition, adhesives, hole pattern, wiring, and fragility of the components affect whether relocation is practical.

Can dimensional logos be illuminated?

Yes. The logo can use halo-lit fabricated components, a lit backer, edge-lit acrylic, push-thru elements, or other sign-specific LED methods. The electrical design must be coordinated with material depth, wall reflectance, power access, service, permits, and UL requirements.

What is a 2.5-dimensional sign?

It is a relief sign with multiple cut or carved depths rather than a fully sculpted object. HDU is especially useful for this approach because backgrounds, lettering, borders, textures, and logos can be machined into one weather-resistant panel.

How do you keep many small logo pieces aligned?

S2 uses full-size patterns, registration marks, backers, hidden rails, preassembled groups, and measured reference lines. The approved artwork becomes an installation system, not merely a visual guide.
