What Are Light Box (Cabinet) Signs?

Light Box Signs go by a couple of different names. Sign Cabinets, Cabinet Signs, Box Signs, Sign Boxes are just a couple of their aliases. No matter what you call them, Light Box Signs are a very common form of electric signage.

Light Box Signs can be made to just about any size and shape, but most Light Box Signs are just a square or rectangle. The sign body is made from a strong aluminum extrusion. The extrusion, which comes in many different depths and profiles, serves as the walls for the Light Box Sign.

Once the walls have been constructed an aluminum sheet metal back is welded into the assembly. The back, in conjunction with the walls, has now made the superstructure of the Light Box Sign and is very strong and ready for the next step.

A face is needed to display your message. A panel made from acrylic, polycarbonate, flexible face material (called Panaflex) or even aluminum is cut to size and prepared and decorated using translucent vinyl graphics and/or paints.

The face is secured to the Light Box Sign using some type of retainer system. The retainers will match the profile of the selected aluminum extrusion chosen for the body.

After this, all there is to do is add premium LED lighting, LED power supplies and a fresh coat of paint! Your Light Box Sign can be painted any color you want. We use Matthews Paint to coat all of our electric signs. This high-quality paint formulated by PPG (the makers of high-quality automotive finishes) can be custom formulated to match any color you want. We can even match Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Glidden, Pantone and many, many other color systems.

What Are Light Box Signs Made From?

Depending on the size and shape of the Light Box Sign – we choose the materials that would work best for your particular application. Most of the time, though, the body of the Light Box Sign is constructed from aluminum extrusion which provides a lot of strength, longevity, and flexibility.

Again, depending on the size and shape of your new Light Box Sign, the face is made usually from either acrylic or polycarbonate. We use sign-grade, impact resistant acrylic for our smaller sign cabinets, and unbreakable white polycarbonate for our larger cabinets.  The use of these strong plastics gives your sign face the strength it needs to survive the harsh Colorado weather.

The lighting comes from LED modules that have been picked for their superior light distribution. We use LEDs that are extremely energy efficient and known for their advanced optics. On the face of every LED module, there is a small lens that projects the light at 170 degrees for wide, even coverage of the sign face. This light distribution paired with the brightness of each module leaves us with the result we intended. The BRIGHTEST Light Box Signs that you’ll find anywhere.

How Big Can Light Box Signs Be?

We can make Light Box Signs as big or as small as you’d like. Most of the time, however, the sign code in your local area is going to determine just how big of a Light Box Sign you are permitted to have.

Light Box Signs require sign permits and, as such, they have to follow a set of rules that dictate how large they can be. The formula usually has something to do with how many linear feet of store frontage you have to the street you wish to expose the sign toward.

The formula will read something like this: For every 1 linear foot of frontage you have on your building, the City will allow you 1 square foot of signage. So in that example, a commercial building with 30 linear feet of storefront would be allowed a 30 square foot sign. You could then use that square footage allotment to figure out which shape sign would work best for your application.

Each local area has its own set of rules. When you choose to purchase a Light Box Sign with S2 Signs we do all that research for you and will present you with a design and estimate that will take your local sign code into consideration.

Where Can I Put Light Box Signs?

Light Box Signs can be installed almost anywhere. They are usually installed outside on the wall of your building but they can be placed wherever you need exposure.

Light Box Signs can be made either single-face or double face and are often a key component to Pole Signs and Monument Signs.

Light Box Signs can be installed on brick, stucco, wood, concrete, and metal buildings. The only thing that needs to be taken into consideration when installing a new Light Box Sign that is intended to be illuminated, is the need for a supply of electricity.

When we come out to survey your location for your new Light Box Sign we will be able to tell you if there is already electricity in place for a lighted sign.

How Much Do Light Box Signs Cost?

Light Box Signs vary in price depending on what it is, exactly, that you need it to do and where it is intended on being installed.

Most customers are looking for a ‘ballpark’ estimate on their new Light Box Sign. Assuming that you’re looking for a 24 square foot Light Box Sign (3’x8’ is pretty standard) to be designed, permitted, fabricated and installed you’d be looking at a price of somewhere between $2,200 and $4,000 – a pretty wide margin, we know.

Please keep in mind that the price mentioned above is used for estimation only. A lot of different factors need to be taken into consideration to get accurate pricing.

We are more than happy to visit your location for a free, no obligation, onsite consultation. While on site, we’ll talk to you about where you want your new sign, the basic design, and get some basic measurements.
